5 Health & Fitness Fads You Should Avoid

“Just take two pills in the morning and the pounds will melt away!” How many times have we heard a promise like this? And how many times, even if you’ve thought that there was no way that’s true, have we let our minds wonder if this is the product that really does work? Here are a few fad diet products and fitness fads that promise to help you lose the weight that you’re better off avoiding:

1. Any diet pill

The vast majority of these pills are nothing more than caffeine pills that make you feel jittery and do next to nothing to suppress your appetite or shed pounds. In fact, most of them will say on the box or bottle that they work “when combined with a healthy diet and exercise” – meaning that if you just follow a good exercise program and eat well then you’ll lose weight… the pills are just there for… well, nothing.

2. Toning shoes

Talk about becoming an overnight sensation! Shoes designed to help shape you up while you’re simply going through your day as usual hit the markets and people went crazy over them. However doing any amount of research will show you that these shoes are nothing more than regular shoes, and don’t really promote any toning at all…

3. Pizza as a vegetable

Actually Congress voted that the tomato paste on pizzas counted as a serving of vegetables, but that’s not what anyone heard; they heard that pizza was a vegetable. But even if it does contain a serving of vegetables, does that really make it healthy? Homemade pizzas may be healthier than their store-bought, school-bought, or pizzeria-bought counterparts, but no matter how you look at it pizza still isn’t exactly a ‘health’ food even if the tomato paste does have a serving of vegetables.

4. Cleanse diets

Cleanses all promise to do the same thing: rid your body of unwanted toxins by cutting out most (if not all) foods for a few days and focusing on consuming only liquids to purify your system. However your body was designed to cleanse itself naturally, so all you’re going to do during a cleanse is shed water weight and be irritable from lack of food and nutrients.

5. Counting video games as exercise

Now that you get up and move around with interactive video games there’s the misconception that you’re getting in some sort of work out. However, while getting up and moving does beat sitting on the couch all day, you’re still better off moving outside or hitting the gym to actually see fitness results… not relying on a video game.

Any product that offers an easy way to slim down and tone up is sure to become an overnight sensation, which is a true testament to how lazy we’re becoming. However when it sounds too good to be true with claims telling you that you don’t have to do any work and the pounds will just melt off, then it’s probably just that – a false claim aimed at slimming down your wallet not your waistline.
