Self-help is full of tools and tricks for self-improvement and accomplishing your dreams, but what support is there for those who are happy with themselves and feel no burning needs or inadequacies? One might wonder if such a person exists and if they do, with what do they struggle or need help?
We could query Maslow or the most boring man in the world, but Maslow assumes need and the mbmw doesn’t have much left to say. Certainly nothing in the media, an information industry that thrives on conflict and sales, can offer us anything but lessons in what peace and contentment is not – it’s not fame, fortune, nor a sexy spouse and rock star kids. With our brain’s relentless overexposure to all the wrong ways to live, it’s no surprise we’re so poor at servicing our hearts and souls. It’s no surprise we struggle.
What is struggle? Struggle is the toil or taxing effort to assuage some desire. As a general rule, there are two ways of eradicating struggle. You can become strong and able, thus reducing the effort or otherwise reducing the drudgery. Or perhaps more provocatively, you could reduce number, magnitude and complexity of your desires, thus alleviating the need to toil in the first place.
Easier said than done? Of course, but what isn’t. That said, unless you’re enjoying the struggle, in what else should you invest your time and energy? Nothing.
Here’s how to get started.
