Shrinking Perspective and One Step At A Time

When the going gets tough the tough gets going. When life gets rough we’re often told to take it one step at a time. Perhaps most valuable is the shrinking perspective. As the weight of the world is set upon our shoulders, perceptively speaking, it is a relief to focus on just a small part of our challenge. Focusing on one step at a time, one day at a time, makes our challenge more manageable.

While in this mode of one step at a time, keeping our heads down to search for peace, and otherwise coping with the curveballs of our lives, we are not so much progressing – we are surviving. In focusing on one step, we are no longer seeing the journey nor adjusting for our ever-shifting destination and desires. In focusing on one day, we are no longer carrying the weight of building our futures or emotionally managing the realities of our deaths or the end of civilization.

Woah, what’s the point? Ha, let’s skip the big one and focus only on this article. We’ll build bigger pictures one article at a time. The point is that living for today reduces your ability to improve your week, your month, or even your year. Coping by taking life one day at a time may pull you from the mud but never from the dirt. In order to build a better life you have to learn to deal with the weight of life, consider your world and commit to making significant changes. When it’s all you can do to stay alive, cope, but with every new ounce of energy turn your perspective to the future and build a safer, more solid world for you and your loved ones.
