To end a long story before it begins, we’ve just moved and want to turn our new digs into a place that welcomes friends, family, and nights at home. Our previous apartment was great for what it was. But the garden level aka basement aspect of it, the bugs that I’ve never seen before, and the boxes that were never unpacked began to get to me – it never became a home. This is the start of what I hope becomes a series of posts documenting getting our creative juices flowing and turning our step-up into a giant leap of coziness.
Project 1: Bar stools. We have a breakfast bar! But no stools. The stools that were there before were more space age then what we wanted. Our desired theme: nouveau eclectic. Our source: Chestnuthill Antique warehouse.
We bought 4 stools, probably from 4 different eras, from a very old gentleman who adored us for being “his first customers of the week” (noon on a Sunday) and asked us to return not because he liked us but because he liked our money. But for $42, we got a mix at a steal (the large stool with a back support was ticketed originally at $45).
We proceeded to demolish the stool with a back (Romania is carved into the underside – did we destroy history?). We pulled plastic grocery bags over the seats and pulled the edges into the sides. Blue tape easily secured the bags without bunching. The process of painting was as eclectic as the desired finish. Flip an old carpet, flip an old laundry basket and use as painting stand. I’d recommend face masks and old clothes as the spray paint dissipates everywhere.

With an old rug, an upside-down-beat-up laundry basket and some black spray paint, we got this:
Cost:
4 stools: $42
3 cans of spray paint: $15
Tape: $3.99
Excessively large iced tea and iced coffee to accompany us on our failed-yard-sale-bounty-hunting=priceless.
