We rely on our eyes day in and day out to give us so much information. Many of us wouldn’t be the same if we couldn’t use them, and we only have two! We need to take care of our eyes as much as possible in order to keep them healthy. It’s important to take precautions when wearing makeup to ensure that it won’t damage your eyes. Here are ten tips to make sure you stay safe when using eye makeup.
1. Check your makeup expiration dates.
Throw away eye makeup when it expires – every three months. If you get a liquid or creamy kind of eye makeup like mascara, it will expire faster and harbor bacteria – not something you want to encourage near your eyes. Throw out anything that irritates your eyes or gives you an allergic reaction.
2. Keep makeup cool and dry.
Some people keep their makeup in a bathroom, but steamy environments can encourage bacteria growth. Keep it in a cool, dark, dry place in your bedroom, for example. This will prolong the makeup lifespan.
3. Wash your hands and brushes first.
Before you apply eye makeup, make sure you thoroughly wash your hands. If you’re using applicators or brushes, be sure they are also clean and washed. Finally, ensure your face and eyelids are clean.
4. Never share makeup with friends or other customers.
It’s tempting to share your makeup with a friend who might need a touchup, but don’t do it. You don’t want to contaminate your makeup, even if they never have eye infections or other problems. Similarly, don’t use store testers, or you’re sharing your makeup with strangers.
5. Don’t use dried-out makeup.
If your makeup is old enough that it has dried out, particularly mascara, don’t use it or try to moisten it again with water. Just throw it out and get a new tube.
6. Never line the inner lid.
Some people like to try lining inside the eye, but this can cause irritation, clogged glands, and even run into your eye. Stick to the outside lines only.
7. Don’t use kohl.
It’s tempting to try smoky shades of kohl eyeliners, but they can contain lead. You don’t want this element anywhere near your eyes.
8. Avoid metallic, shimmery, powdered, or glittery makeup.
Fancy makeups that might flake such as metallic or shimmering variants, glitter, or powder can easily flake into your eye. If you wear contacts, they can damage your eyes by getting between your eyeball and cornea.
9. Don’t dye your lashes or eyebrows.
Permanent dyes can be damaging to your eyes, so avoid dying your eyebrows or lashes. If you must, see a skilled professional, but steering clear altogether is a better option.
10. Take off all your makeup at night.
You might be tired and forgetful, but don’t leave on your makeup – especially mascara – when you go to sleep. A cotton ball or swab along the lash line will help you get off any remnants of mascara. Use eye makeup remover, and be sure not to get it in your eye. Rinse off your eyelids and face before going to bed.
You need to take care of your eyes if you want them to work for you for years to come. Make sure you don’t make shortsighted mistakes that leave you shortsighted later in life.
