Burn The Candles

Some gifts you receive and set aside, no matter how special or how mundane they are, because they are gifts that feel “right” to save for the “right” moment. I’m not talking about the annually gifted ugly sweater you have to wear when your great-aunt comes over because she made it. You know these types of gifts. They are the candles that you got in your Easter basket three years ago that are still attached by the wick, the Omaha steaks that are in your freezer because you owe it to grandma to eat them on a special occasion, the china that is from your wedding that you’ve used twice in two years. It’s time to burn the candles.

I appreciate New Year’s Resolutions but I believe that every day is a good day for a resolution, everyday is special. If I wake up and tell myself I’m going to belt a song out on my way to work every morning starting THIS morning, I’m going to do it and in three weeks it will be habit. That means I have one less thing to resolve to do next December 31st. I tell you this because it is a good idea, and it decreases the epic potential of January 1st and spreads that out evenly to every other lowly day of the year.

So what are you waiting for? How will you know when The Moment has arrived to eat those freezer burned steaks? Don’t wait for New Years Eve–today is special. Valentine’s Day is just a title, December 24th is just a date, and the pilgrims did not dine with the Indians on the 4th Thursday of November. Today exists, celebrate it. And you get candles every year for Easter so relax; you are saving yourself from growing up to be the crazy-candle-person.

As for the ugly sweater, wear it when your great-aunt comes over. Today is probably more special for her than it is for you.
