It’s been a while since I’ve written. I find myself toeing the line, anxiously awaiting the sparkless gun of my own inspired commitment. I’ve no idea where this line will take me, what will come of this article, but I know one thing for sure. I would not have known its full potential had I not given it the opportunity of my love and commitment.
The first step in writing has nothing to do with plot tools, writing utensils or superstitions. The first step in writing is the belief that you have something worth saying, worth sharing, worth writing at least. In this case, I’m writing with full intention of sharing whatever I produce, so I must believe that I have something worth sharing with you.
The second step in writing is to figure out what on earth you are writing about. The title of this article has taken shape in the wake of these rambling paragraphs, but even now it grows unfitting. I’m on step two of how to write an article, perhaps the most appropriate theme and title, though it’s step three I’m most interested in discussing today.
The third step in writing is commitment. No, it’s not the first. There’s a trial period. Thank my critical daemons that I don’t share all my drivel with you here. If you want drivel, you’re going to have to search for it. Hint.
Commitment
We were talking about writing but you’re here for health and wealth and love and anecdotal, philosophical ramblings, I hope. When it comes to losing weight and keeping it off, training for a physical performance, building a business, fully realizing the potential of your relationships, and reading anecdotal, philosophical ramblings – commitment is required. Commitment is the sufficient investment of your time and energy in some idea, goal, person, project or open-ended exploration. Without commitment, you will not know what you could have accomplished, what you could have built, who you could have been.
Balance
I don’t have time – I’m too busy. I don’t have the energy – I’m too tired. Commitment requires the focus of your time and energy. Balance is not in conflict with commitment; it’s required. If commitment requires that you exhaust yourself, double-check the big picture. You’re primary commitment, first and foremost, is to yourself – unless you’re a parent in which case it’s to survive while investing your time and energy in your children, imho. Barring the exhausting work of a parent, including young and long-term relationships, your primary commitment is to yourself, to find a balance in your life that maximizes your experience in this lifetime.
Conclusion
Okay, I said some stuff. We skipped the part where I tell you what I’m going to teach you because I had no idea where we were going. Then I taught you something, hopefully. Now, I tell you what I taught you and thank you for the ride.
