Delayed gratification and happiness

“High performers delay gratification, but not happiness.”Bob Riding, Design happiness

A very successful friend of mine has talked to me at length about delayed gratification. I find hope in the recognition of similarities in our approach to life. There is something deeply satisfying, undeniably exciting about working for a better future, about knowing you are building a better future. Maybe it’s the sensation of knowing something you shouldn’t know, that life is going to be good. Maybe it’s the sensation of power, that you are in control of your destiny. Whatever it is, it feels good.

It’s easy for me to believe that sensations of satisfaction, excitement, progress, foresight and empowerment would contribute to a present sense of happiness. As we are fulfilled by the very experience of building a better future, we’re in no rush to cash in our chips. We’re set to enjoy the day and look forward to tomorrow. Life is good, it feels good and it just keeps getting better.

So what are you waiting for? Get started today! What would you be grateful to receive. How can you earn it? Start working towards it. See it on the horizon. Experience the great joy of a job well done and reward in your future.
