The Little Things

I thought I’d write today not because I am thinking something profound but because I am feeling something profound. I’d like to share that energy.

Sunshine. Happy people with cheerful demeanor at 8 am on a weekday morning. The smell of fresh bakery products from Whole Foods. Patio tables out in New England. Ray Lamontagne in my ears. Happy surprises from and for family.

I’ve taken to keeping a notebook for the sole purpose of writing three happy thoughts in the morning. The only stipulation is that I cannot be lazy about it. I cannot write today, tomorrow and the next that I am happy to have my boyfriend or family or health…too easy. I think about what exactly it is in that moment that has put a smile on my face. This does one immediate thing: it puts a smile on my face because I have to come up with a reason for that smile. And this morning I realized it’s other more long-term affect: it creates room for my second paragraph.
