The Paleo Diet

The Paleo Diet seeks to mimic the dietary habits of our hunter-gatherer ancestors. It consists of lean meats, seafood, fresh fruits, and vegetables. Professor Loren Cordain has touted it’s health benefits in many of the world’s best scientific journals. He claims it can lead to ideal body weight, optimum health, and peak athletic performance as well as lower your risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, obesity, osteoporosis, arthritis, acne, gastrointestinal disease, autoimmune diseases, and more.

Acceptable foods include meat, fish, shellfish, eggs, tree nuts, vegetables, roots, fruit, berries, and mushrooms. Oils should be from fruits (olive, oil palm, avocado) or tree nuts (coconut, walnut, almond, hazelnut, pecan, macadamia). Water is the only acceptable beverage and raw honey is the only acceptable sweetener.

Is calorie counting better then low fat diets?

      Dan,

We need fat, and there are many supporters of the counter-part to the low fat diet fad, the low carb. In my opinion, both approaches are ridiculous. If you want to lose weight, just consume less calories than you burn each day. This includes all calories burned (BMR), not just what your treadmill says. For example, according to a Tanita Body Composition Analyzer TBF-300 anlysis on 01/08/2011, my Basal Metabolic Rate is 8613 kJ (2059kcal). This means the machine estimates that if I eat only 2000 calories per day, I will be losing weight (at a rate of 1lb every 2 months).

More simply, we lose weight by subjecting our bodies to calorie deficit. Low fat diets may help us to do this, but there is nothing magic about eating less fat. You can eat anything you want and lose weight; but you cannot eat as much as you want and lose weight.

      Thanks,
      Geoff
