It was recently suggested that my beliefs seem very much in line with the philosophies of Taoism. I generally avoided religious and philosophical texts as a child so as not to distort my own relationship with existence and the universe. Now I appreciate the philosophies of others as challenges, supplements and reinforcements for my own beliefs. In this article we can begin exploring Taoism together.
Taoism 道教
道教 or Taoism is a philosophy and religion that emphasizes living in harmony with the Tao, the source and essence of everything that exists.
Tao 道
道 is a Chinese word that translates to Tao or Dao depending on the romanization system used. It is usually translated as way, path or principle and is usually used to mean reality or nature. Tao is the source and essence of everything that exists. The proper path in life, says Taoism, is one that works in harmony with reality, the essence of the natural universe.
Tao Te Ching
The Tao Te Ching is a concise book of teachings that serves as the primary text of Taoism. The Tao Te Ching’s teachings are attributed to Laozi, the Old Teacher, a philosopher of ancient China who is traditionally considered the founder of Taoism.
The Three Jewels of the Tao
The Three Jewels of the Tao are compassion, moderation, and humility. Taoist thought generally focuses on nature, the relationship between humanity and the cosmos; health and longevity; and action through inaction (wu wei). The intended result of the Taoist practice is harmony with Tao, the universe and its source.
