I should but I don’t want to.
I want to but I shouldn’t.
We often find ourselves in a false dilemma of whether we should do something that we want to but know we shouldn’t, or know that we should but don’t want to.
If you should, you should. You already know.
If you shouldn’t, you shouldn’t. You already know.
| Shouldn’t | Unsure/Mixed | Should | |
| Want | Don’t. | ? | Do it! |
| Neutral | Don’t. | ? | Do it. |
| Not Want | Don’t! | ? | Do it. |
When you’re not sure…
When we’re unsure or mixed on whether we should, we might tend to do what we want and avoid what we don’t want, but this is exactly the opposite of what I recommend!
I you want to, your thinking about whether you should is probably biased.
This is helpful when you’re not sure whether you should.
If you’re not sure whether you should,
– but you want to, then you probably shouldn’t!
-and you don’t want to, then you probably should!
And if you’re neutral or unsure and mixed or unclear about whether you should, then just skip it.
| Shouldn’t | Mixed/Unclear | Should | |
| Want | Don’t. | Shouldn’t! | Do it! |
| Neutral/Unsure | Don’t. | Skip it. | Do it. |
| Not Want | Don’t! | Should! | Do it. |
Note: The want doesn’t dictate whether you should. It is that we are correcting for the likely bias induced by our wanting or not wanting.
The short version: Do it if you should or are unsure and don’t want to!
