Denial is one more version of deception. It worsens with self-deception. It’s not just avoiding truth; it is our attempt to reshape reality to protect ourselves from the discomfort of confronting the blunt force of truth.
Self-denial creeps up on us with soft inner talk. We tell ourselves stories, like the situation is just temporary, we can deal with it later, it’s probably not that serious. Over time, this self-talk erodes our inner anchor and compromises our identity.
The problem we face is that postponing truth increases eventual consequences. That’s what makes it so powerful and, over time, so expensive.
