The luxury of time

Why, what and how

Philosophers and project managers like to understand the why before they move on to the what and how.  Understanding the reason makes sense for many things you do, but they need to fit in the right context.

If you fell off a boat in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay, it may be better to know how to swim to safety, and then adapt to the why and what.

If you have the luxury of time to figure out the why, you can generate the what and then the how – perhaps in this case swimming back to the boat, or making it back to shore.

The challenge in starting with the why is that you must first find, or more likely create, the luxury of time.
